North Babylon School District residents who are considering enrolling their children in private or parochial schools for the 2007 - 2008 school year are reminded that they are required, by state mandate, to file a request for transportation prior to April 1, 2007, unless the family moves into the district after April 1. In this case, the request must be made within 30 days of establishing residency. This deadline will be strictly construed; a late request may result in the denial of transportation. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Transportation on Phelps Lane or you may call 631-321-3246.

Please note: Those parents requesting transportation to a private or parochial school for Kindergarten age children or those requesting such transportation for the first time must come to Room 105 (Registrar's Office) at the North Babylon High School and provide the satisfactory proof of residency before transportation will be approved. In order to be eligible for transportation to a private or paro- chial school for a Kindergarten student, your child must be age five on or before December 1, 2007.

Three forms of proof of residency in North Babylon are required for everyone requesting transportation to a private or parochial school. One proof should be a 2005-2006 or 2006-07 Town of Babylon Property Tax Bill. Renters should also have a notarized landlord's affidavit form. Copies of this form may be obtained in Room 105 (Registrar's Office) at the North Babylon High School.

If you are uncertain of your need for transportation for a private or parochial school, it is advisable to have more than one application on file before the April 1 deadline. For more information, please call Mrs. Murphy, supervisor of transportation, at 631- 321-3246.

BSD kindergarten registration

School districts need to plan ahead for incoming kindergartners arriving in September, 2007. Therefore, registration for those entering kindergarten in the Babylon School District in the fall, will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 8 and 9, 9 to11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Babylon Elementary School. Evening registration will be held on Thursday, March 15, 6 to 8 p.m. at the school.

Children must be five years of age on or before December 1, 2007, in order to be enrolled. It is mandatory that incoming kindergartners have a physical exam, for which the school nurse will require proof, and documentation of immunization for polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, Hepatitis B, and varicella. Other medical history will also be requested.

Additionally, parents/guardians need to bring to registration two proofs of residency, a photo ID, and the child's birth certificate.

Utility bills will not be accepted as proof of residency. Accepted examples include a mortgage bill, village or town tax bill, and a rental lease.

Kindergarten provides a variety of experiences that are developmentally appropriate and intellectually stimulating. There are science projects, math, language, and a foundation of learning geared to the 21st Century, New York State's Standards of Learning, and the Federal No Child Left Behind Law.
