Jeanne Bowlan Zimmerman, former West Islip resident

Jeanne Bowlan Zimmerman, age 83, died on January 24, 2007 at Southampton Hospital due to cardiac arrest. She had been a resident of Hampton Bays, New York since 1990.

Born July 29, 1923 in New York City, Jeanne Bowlan was the daughter of Wall Street investment banker Frederic James Bowlan and Core Milam Rogers, who was an actress with the Ziegfeld Follies and had appeared in silent films made in Fort Lee, NJ.

She was educated at Edgewood School, a boarding school in Greenwich, Connecticut and spent childhood summers hiking and canoeing around New England from bases at Camp Killooleet, Hancock, Vermont and Camp Blazing Trails in Maine. Later, she attended Katharine Gibbs School in New York for training as an executive secretary.

She married D. Cary Dodd of Babylon, on June 20, 1942 at Saint James Episcopal Church, New York City. They resided in West Islip, New York and later moved to Babylon, New York.

She began her career as an executive secretary for McGraw-Hill in Manhattan. While raising her four sons, she re-entered the workforce at Republic Aviation, Farmingdale, NY.

In 1967, she divorced Cary Dodd and moved to Northern California. She worked as an executive secretary, primarily for the Lockheed Satellite Test Center, Sunnyvale, CA and GTE Sylvania, Mountain View, CA.

In 1987 she married Robert W. Zimmerman, Jr., a native of West Islip, New York, in New Orleans. Following his retirement from the Department of Energy, they moved to Hampton Bays, NY. They enjoyed cruising to exotic ports of call in the Caribbean, the British Isles, the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Hawaii, Tahiti and around South America, including the Falkland Islands.

She shared her husbands' love of sailing and was a past member of the Babylon Yacht Club and the Great South Bay Cruising Club. In recent years, she was a member of the Southampton Yacht Club.

She served as an active volunteer at Southampton Hospital, and especially enjoyed supporting the Hampton Classic Horse Show. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters and the Parrish Art Museum. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Southampton.

Jeanne was the mother of Christopher Edward Dodd of Concord, California; Morgan Cary Dodd of Washington, D.C.; and Mark Foster Dodd of Hampton Bays, New York. Her late son, Peter Frederic Dodd, predeceased her in 1995. She is also survived by her brother Frederic James Bowlan, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held on January 29, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
