Lindenhurst High School students take on "Rachel's Challenge"

For the second year in a row, students at Lindenhurst High School have signed on to take R a c h e l ' s Challenge in an effort to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion throughout the school and community. The Rachel's Challenge program is a captivating and emotional program detailing the life of Rachel Scott, the first student to be killed in the Columbine school shooting seven years ago.

After last year's program in which Rachel's Challenge was introduced to high school students, this year Rachel's father, Daryl Scott, presented Rachel's Legacy. He built on what the students learned last year and challenged students to eliminate prejudices, set life goals, and choose good influences. Scott stated, "It's not the number of years you spend on this planet that matters. It's what you do with the time you have."

After assemblies to each grade, Scott conducted a training session for all Peer Leaders. He challenged the group to start a "Friends of Rachel Club" within Lindenhurst High School. With the club, students at Lindenhurst would be able to communicate with students in inner-city schools, as well as students in other countries. The goal is for students to "reach out to people different them themselves."
