W.I. schedules 5K Race

West Islip's Wellness Weekend, March 2 to 4, a time for family fun and good exercise, will culminate with a 5K Fun Run, Walk and Jogathon, sponsored by West Islip Schools, COMPASS (COMmunity, PArents, School, Students), and the Health & Wellness Alliance, on the morning of Sunday, March 4. All proceeds help to fund substance abuse prevention programs in the district.

Wellness Weekend, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, and continues on Saturday in West Islip High School, offers something for everyone: sports, yoga, workshops, competition, healthily cooking, cancer awareness and prevention, coping techniques and family support strategies, swimming and more. The 5K Run on Sunday is open to everyone and permits baby carriages and pet dogs. Warm-ups begin at 9:30 a.m. and the race begins at 11 a.m. at the high school. This annual rain or shine event drew over 700 participants last year. For 2007, the first 750 registered runners/walkers will receive a free Tshirt at the race. If race registration is submitted before February 28th, the fee is $5 per person or $15 for families of four or more. As of March 1, including the day of the race, the fee is $7 per person and $18 for families of four or more.

Officials will also present first, second and third Place awards to the West Islip elementary schools with the highest percentage of student and staff participation. The first place total competition school will receive a victory banner and $250 for school wishes. For more information about the elementary school team participation, contact Principal John Mullins at 631-893-3290. For additional information on the 5K Race, contact the Athletic Department at 631-893- 3200, ext 345.

The winner of the 2007 race logo is parent Victoria Spedale, who is donating the prize of $250 to MADD (Mothers Against Driving Drunk).
