A disgruntled former employee of Kydd's Marine Center at 555 West Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst was charged by police with setting a fire that caused $2 million in damage. The fire broke out at 7:50 a.m., January 28 and it took firefighters 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

"Everyone from the police to the firefighters handled things very well," said Lindenhurst Village Mayor TomBrennan who rushed to the scene of the fire early Sunday morning. "It was a very difficult situation because of all of the fiberglass and it is just fortunate that no one was hurt or killed."

Suffolk Police and Lindenhurst Fire Department volunteers rushed to the scene. Arriving units found the structure fully engulfed. Police later arrested Alfredo Bartos, 69, of 268 East Shore Rd., Lindenhurst and charged him with arson, third degree.

Firefighters pulled about six boats on trailers out of the burning building, said FiRe Chief Robert J. Pflug.

"There was a lot of heavy black smoke because of all of the fiberglass in the building," said Pflug. "And even before we go there the building was in danger of collapsing. "

Pflug said that approximately 100 firefighters were at the scene, assisted by Copiague firefighters, and that given the intensity of the blaze, and its timing, he was suspicious at the outset that it was arson. "We immediately called in police," he said.

Sources said that Bartos was a former employee of the Marine Center and that he apparently broke a window on the side of the building and threw in some gasoline, igniting it. They said that once he saw the extent of the damage, he turned himself into police.

Bartos was held overnight at the First Precinct and was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
