Travelers' Club news

The December 4 meeting of the Travelers' Club was held at the home of Mary Valentine. The first paper of the evening was Mexico City presented by Margaret Weiman. Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the center of the nation's political, cultural and economic life. It's population of over 18 million makes it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. It is located in the south central part of the country and its high altitude of 7,500 feet, gives it a fairly consistent and moderate climate, with average temperatures around 61 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ninety-two percent of the population profess membership in the Catholic Church. Only 3.2 percent are Protestant and less than 0.3 percent are Jewish.

While nearly all of the children in Mexico City between ages seven and 13 attend elementary school, one third never progress beyond the sixth grade. There is a shortage of school space which is more acute at the secondary level. Mexico City faces many of the same problems and advantages as any large cities in the world.

The title of the second paper, given by Jocelyn Pisani, was Santa Anna and the Mexican-American War. Santa Anna was born in 1794 and joined the Mexican Army when he was a teenager. He became president of Mexico but overthrew the government and became a dictator. He was a general in the Army. He fought at the Alamo and in the Mexican War. The Mexican War was 1846 to 1848. The war resulted in a decisive United States victory and forced Mexico to give up New Mexico and California. It also set the Southern boundary of Texas. The Mexican War was the starting point for many West Pointers who would lead the battles of the Civil War-Jackson, Sherman, Grant and Lee, as well as Jefferson Davis who became president of the Confederacy.
