Police prevent suicide on Southern State Parkway

All traffic on the Southern State Parkway and Little East Neck Road was briefly stopped while Suffolk County Police prevented an emotionally disturbed man from committing suicide on Wednesday, January 17.

The subject, who was not identified by police, was being transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by East Farmingdale ambulance when he jumped out of the ambulance onto the Southern State Parkway. Police Officers chased the man down the Southern State Parkway on foot. The man managed to reach the top overpass at Little East Neck Road and the Southern State Parkway. He then climbed over the railing and threatened to jump off.

Following a 15 minute standoff, where Police Officer Robert Cardona continuously talked to the man to keep him from jumping, Police Officer Kathleen Focus gained his confidence and managed to grab his hand. Both officers pulled the man over the guardrail to safety. He was taken to Southside Hospital for evaluation.
