A fire that started in a p o r t a b l e heater in the basement of a home on Third Street, W e s t B a b y l o n , caused extensive damage and sent two firefighters to the hospital with smoke inhalation. They were treated and released.

The fire broke out at a p p r o x i - mately 12:05 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they were notified by neighbors that everyone was out of the home. By then, the fire was well underway in the basement, however according to Chief Fincent Senzamici who was in charge at the scene.

First arriving units spread a hose and attacked the blaze from the first floor of the ranch style home, said 2nd Ass't Chief John Randazzo. The first line burst and firefighters used the second line, which was already set up.

Approximately 45 firefighters were on the scene, with North Lindenhurst Fire Department responding with an engine and the East Farmingdale Fire Department sending an ambulance. In less than a half hour the fire was out.

The basement contained a large amount of gunpowder and ammunition, which the homeowner used to reload his own shells, said firefighters. However, the ammunition posed no danger to firefighters. "It doesn't really explode," said Randazzo.
