Lindenhurst High School students pay tribute to veterans

In observance of Veteran's Day, students at Lindenhurst High School took part in a " Ve t e r a n ' s Symposium," coordinated by h i s t o r y teacher Matt B o c a n f u s o . Throughout the day, five veterans spoke to students about their experiences in the armed services, from fighting in World War II to recent deployments to Iraq.

Bill McCowan, a WWII veteran, discussed being captured by enemy troops in Germany and his time as a prisoner of war. He also talked about the liberation of his camp and how proud he was to salute the American flag once his camp was freed. In addition to Mr. McCowan's stories, veterans from the Vietnam War talked to students about their time in war and how proud they were to serve their county.

Gunnery Sergeant Hildago from the United States Marine Corp also addressed students about being deployed to Iraq. He stated, "I joined the Marine Corp because I love my country - I'm here to serve this nation."

Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the veterans and also properly thank the men for their service to the country.

Shown in the photo are Bill McCowan, Joe Ingino, Bill Torres, and Gunnery Sergeant Hidalgo address students at Lindenhurst Middle School as part of a Veteran's Symposium.
