Change in procedure at Babylon Village meetings would open process to the public

We'd like to suggest a change of procedure for the Babylon Village Board when it conducts its twice monthly business meetings. Currently, the board goes over the agenda and votes on it, and then opens the meetings to the public, at which time it can ask questions, make requests and raise any issue that may be on the mind of residents.

We believe the board should open the meeting to the public prior to voting on the agenda, for discussion of agenda items only. This would provide the public with the opportunity to question the board or get clarification on these items, and it would give the board the benefit of the public's insight before it votes on items.

Restricting discussion on agenda items only also ensures that these business meetings are not long delayed by issues that are not before the board and that can be held over or reserved for discussion at another time.

It is a change that makes sense and opens government to the public for participation and review.
