Question: What is really great about living in the Village of Babylon when you get older?

Envelope please.

Answer: Back-door garbage pick up.

That was one of several questions- and answers- that approximately 150 campaign supporters for the Better Babylon Party heard at the party's nomination convention held in Village Hall last week. The event and rally was the kickoff for the Village's campaign season, and the party named incumbent Mayor Ralph Scordino and incumbent Trustees Debbie Basile and Anthony Davida as its candidates. As of Friday, last week, no other candidates had filed for petitions at Village Hall.

Petitions to run for Village office must be filed with the Village Clerk by February 13. Independent candidates need 100 signatures to have their names placed on the ballot.

There was a lot of enthusiasm as the volunteers for the Better Babylon Party picked up their petitions and got detailed instructions from party member Jack Conroy.

They also received thanks from the candidates. Scordino was announced by the nomination host Doug Chapey, who got the rally going with the questions about why it is great to live in Babylon. He called the Mayor an elected official who is doing a great job for Babylon.

"There is hardly a time that I pass Village Hall and don't see Ralph's truck parked there," said Chapey. "And if you call the Mayor's office it's not unusual for him to pick up the phone himself."

That accessibility and his record is what has given him, and his running mates, Better Babylon Party support, said some of those gathered at the event.

"I know them all, like them all and like what they are doing for the Village, said Paul Steinberg.

"I am a Babylonian since I was ten years old. It's important for me to be here tonight because it makes me feel part of this great community."

Scordino thanked his supporters, but added that he is part of a team, which includes not only Davida and Basile but also Trustees Alice Vanderveldt and Kevin Muldowney and the staff and employees of the Village.

"Everyone from the elected officials to the clerical staff to those workers out in the streets picking up the garbage, have a big interest in this Village and help make it great," said Scordino.

"We value your support and the time you are going to take to go out and get these petitions," said Basile. "It has been a pleasure serving for the past four years and being part of this system."

"My focus as a Trustee has been in opening and closing and maintaining the pool and being involved with health and safety," said Davida. "But the important thing is that we all work together as a team and I am looking forward to doing that for another four years."

Scordino has served as the Mayor for 4 and a half years and was a Trustee and Deputy Mayor under Mayor Donald Conroy for 16 years. A retired teacher, he is a member of many local organizations. He and his wife Linda have lived in Babylon for 31 years and have raised two children here.

Basile is president and co-founder of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, where she helps run the daily operations of the organization. She is a member of the BabylonV illage Women's Club and was recently honored as one of the top 50 Women in Business by Long Island Business News. She has been a resident of BabylonV illage for 30 years and she and her husband Paul have a daughter.

Davida has been a Trustee for four and a half years and is a member and former chief of the Babylon Fire Department. He works for the New York State Parks and Recreation and for the past 15 years has been with the engineering department at Regional Headquarters at Belmont Lake State Park. He has lived in the Village for 36 years and he and his wife Patty have a daughter, who lives in the Village with her husband and children.

If the spirit of the rally was expressed best, it was by Andrew Amelia.

"People complain about government but in order to change things, you have to have input and been a part of something," he said. "If we want to keep this Village the way it is, then everyone has to help out." The
