Deer Park School District recognizes longtime educator; welcomes new school Superintendent
Without hesitation, Bingham gladly threw herself into the job, despite her plans to retire, said School Board President Michael Oddo at the event. "It was challenging, but I enjoyed it," said Bingham in discussing her tenure as school superintendent in Deer Park. Bingham's career spanned 32 years, 12 as a teacher, 10 years as an assistant principal, and another ten as the principal of Robert Frost Jr. High School. She said she is looking forward to "officially" retiring now. "I will spend time with my family," said Bingham who was awarded a plaque and a bouquet of flowers at the December school board . Elizabeth Marino officially became the superintendent on October 1, 2006. Her career in education began as a teacher, administrator, finally the Director of Social Studies in the Kings Park District. Following that she became the Director of Alternative and Social Studies Department in the Half Hollow Hills District and then assistant superintendent of the Shoreham & Wading School District. She joined Deer Park two years as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development. Marino said she is very enthusiastic about working for the children, staff and residents of the district because of the tremendous amount of parent support. "I am so impressed with the sense of community support and diversity," she said. "It is a nice district." That's not to say the district is not facing challenges, she noted, adding that like districts throughout New York State, Deer Park must learn to do more with less financial aide. Looking to the future she said she would like to bring a new awareness to literacy, as well as focusing on empowering teachers by using cutting edge education technology. Her motto: "Be the best you can be." In other school news: +Girl Scout Troop #903 presented a new flag for the John F. Kennedy Intermediate School Cafeteria. The girls noticed that the flag was in disrepair and wanted to replace it. They held a cookie fund raiser last spring to raise the money needed. "I am very proud of the girls, they are like second daughters to me." Presenting the flag was: Cathreen Pfundstein, Garbriellia Nattera, Kayla Bockstruck, Sarra Geiersbach, Kristine Kelsch, Amanda Lacoff, Averi Lacoff, Alyson Michalek, Kaitlin Riordan, Rosanna Sinni, Daneela Girana, Danella Girani, Nicolea Ingrassia, Megan Jano, Arneole Sanon. +Deer Park's athletes were honored.
