Legislator Steve Stern's county-wide senior citizen task force bill passes

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (DHuntington) 16th LD announced that his legislation creating a County-Wide Senior Citizens Task Force to study the present and future needs of senior citizens in Suffolk County was passed by the Legislature at the December General Session.

Legislator Stern envisions a working task force that will study issues facing seniors and make recommendations for solutions to problems facing older adults in our community today and in the future. It will also be a helpful tool for County officials and agencies that seek to serve this vital segment of our society. "We all know that Long Island, and particularly Suffolk County is an aging population. With the aging of the baby boomers, it is a trend that will continue to grow. How we plan for this coming "age wave" will determine how we continue to ensure a quality of life for Suffolk's seniors," Legislator Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, said.

The task force will consist of sixteen members including, among others, representatives from each of the ten towns Senior Citizen Division, a representative from the AARP, as well as a senior citizen consumer advocate, appointed by the Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee.

The task force will hold at least four public hearings, the first of which will be at the Suffolk County Legislature, William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge on Tuesday, March 27, 9:30a.m., throughout the County to assemble data and information necessary to complete the evaluation, study and required report to gather and obtain public comment and input from residents. The task force will expire September 1, 2007 at which time it will submit a written report of its findings and determinations and its recommendations for action to the County Legislature and the County Executive. Seniors are facing life-altering decisions such as affordable housing, health care costs, longterm medical care, transportation and available government benefits. Legislator Stern plans to invite leading experts and advocates and senior citizens to participate in this open process and to bring concrete ideas to the table to improve the quality of life of Suffolk County seniors.
