by Greg Sleter

North Babylon High School and its student athletes have been honored as the only school in Suffolk County to receive the New York State Scholar Athlete Team Award for the 2005-2006 school year. All of North Babylon's varsity teams maintained a minimum grade point average of 90.

At a recent meeting of the district's Board of Education, Dr. Joseph Laria, acting superintendent, highlighted several team's grade point averages from the 05-06 school year: boys swimming & diving, 93; girls track, 97.3; field hockey, 94.3; girls cross country, 97.4; gymnastics, 94.6; and girls volleyball, 94.1. The award covers the high school's 24 varsity teams.

"This award shows our exceptional athletes are also exceptional students and have a good balance between the two," Laria said at the November school board meeting.

North Babylon is also only one of three school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties combined to received the award, the first in the school's history.

"The students are really a great group of men and women," said Matt Calarco, athletic director for the North Babylon School District.

A banner commemorating the honor now hangs at the high school.

To make sure student athletes are maintaining high academic standards, he noted that coaches schedule practices at 3 p.m. during school days to allow students needing extra help to attend after school study halls. Students needing extra help are required to provide a signed pass from their teacher to coaches showing their attendance to the study hall.

High school varsity teams have started strong in the current school year in the school's attempt to receive the honor in two consecutive years. Each fall varsity team has grade point averages 90 or above.
