Legislator Steve Stern announces removal of railroad car from Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD announced that the old deteriorated railroad car "Visitors Center" that had been located on the South Service Road of the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills for almost 20 years has been removed by the Suffolk County Department of Public Works. Legislator Stern advocated strongly for immediate removal of the Railroad Car, calling it "a danger and an eyesore that has no place in this residential community".

The railroad car was originally donated to the County by the Long Island Railroad and was open for tourist information between Exits 51 and 52 in the summer months. It has been closed for at least a year and not only served no useful purpose, but had become a magnet for dangerous activity including prostitution and drug use.

"I am gratified that my call to action was heard and that with the assistance of Councilwoman Susan Berland, Congressman Steve Israel, County Executive Levy and Assemblyman Andrew Raia, we were able to remove this hazard and protect the safety of area residents." Stern said.

"I am incredibly happy that the train has finally been removed. It has been an eyesore for years and nothing more than an avenue of camouflage for illicit activity," Councilwoman Berland said.

"The removal of the railroad car is the first step in our continuing goal of preserving the quality of life that our residents treasure and deserve," Stern said.
