Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

Cong. James Grover with President Gerald Ford in January, 1965
IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, and the party of the year, last Saturday when Elena De Murias invited some 250 of her friends of all age groups to wine and dine in a heated tent on the grounds of her beautiful Argyle Park home. For some 40 years the last Jean and Joe Young, also of Argyle Park had entertained their friends at a Christmas party, and Elena said that their party had been inspirational as she planned her festivities. There was even a "Young" table replicating the various gourmet foods served by Jean and Joe. Three generations of Babylonians enjoyed the delicious food from Deliciously Different. Endless hors d'oeuvres of shrimp, crab cakes and every delicacy imaginable were passed during the evening, and champagne flowed the whole time. There was even an ice sculpture, a surprise gift from local artist Danny Bergen. A very special feature was the chocolate fountain and all of the goodies for the little ones who had their own tables and chairs with toys and gifts. And a very special guest was Santa who arrived to thrill all of the children (he sounded just like Ferris Mack). Enjoyed seeing so many of the "youngsters" who came with their children, and of course our generation came out for the big affair. Elena has heaps of thanks to so many: Adrian Killen, who was a behindthe scenes assistant, Argyle Flowers and Garden supplied the huge 14 foot Christmas tree lovingly decorated by Elena and her helpers all of the St. John children and grandchildren, Jim Killen who provided 18 hours of music, Sean Goodwin who was a design consultant, Jim Van Denise of White Iris who designed the floral decorations, Kenny Rogers and Chuck Hoyler who were the consultants on the electric power, and last but not least, special thanks go to Babylon Village Sanitation workers who removed the mounds of garbage so quickly and efficiently. The guests who attended left with smiles on their faces - you made a lot of people very happy Elena.

ONE OF OUR OWN Jim Grover was our Congressman for many years and he not only knew President Gerald Ford, but served with him in the 88th Congress. Jim and Congressman Jack Wydler played a very significant role in Mr. Ford's election as Minority Leader. The congressman needed two votes to defeat Charles Halleck in the contest and Jim and Jack Wydler were called to get to D.C. from Long Island A.S.A.P. Their plane arrived in the nick of time and they ran up the capital steps to find an anxious Gerald Ford waiting for them to vote. He won by their two votes; the election propelled him on to the national scene, and as we all know, he went on to be selected as vice president and then president, much admired and respected by the nation. Jim served 12 years in Congress from 1962 until 1974.

IT'S A BOY for Allison and Tim Bridges of Babylon Village. Lucas George Bridges was born in StonyBrook Hospital on December 20, weighing in at nine pounds. He joins his sister Gwyneth, age two. The baby's grandparents are Sue Borg of Babylon, Clifford Borg of Massapequa and Marie and John Bridges of Babylon.

A FAMILY OF FRIENDS HAVING FUN. This was the feeling at the second Good Sam employees holiday party held recently at the beautifully decorated Brentwood Country Club. Hosts Kelly McLoughlin and Ted Mangione (printers) did an outstanding job creating and continuing this event. Kelly (H.R.) was there with her newly announced fiance Ray Fisher along with her parents Jacqueline and John McLoughlin(security) and future mother-in-law Jean and her guest John. Also in attendance was brother John McLoughlin,R.N. in the operating room. Other party people were Darienve Feragine (nursing administration) and her husband, Marina Nilsen (communications) and her husband, E.E. volunteer Jeanne Ramsey, Sam Miller (security) and his wife Cynthia, Dr. Anthony Capizzi and his (R.N.) wife Ellen, admitting Robin Hilbert and guest Joe, Brigid Murphy and Karen Miller, Lauren Bessette, Maryann Black, Nicole Conefry, Shannon Naglie, Mike Devlin, Allison Friesen - all dancing the night away. Also A.S.U.'s Ellen Mackey, Deborah Bacon, Charmaine Celetti, Liz Gallardo, Jean Cronin and Cathy Monti were having a great time. The dinner food was unending, diversified and delicious.
