Two Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center employees were recently presented with the hospital's prestigious Bernstein Award. The award was established in honor of the late Marvin Bernstein, MD, in order to recognize Good Samaritan employees who embody the same virtues Dr. Bernstein personified, such as humanitarianism, compassion and empathy. Employees are nominated by their peers and recipients are chosen by a committee made up of previous award winners. The first Bernstein Award was given in 1985. Martin Podgainy, MD, a friend and colleague of Dr. Bernstein's presented the award to Trauma/Neurosurgery's Maureen Sheridan, NP, and Breast Health Center's Bonnie Edsall, RN, at a recent hospital ceremony.

Sheridan, trauma-neurosurgical clinical specialist, joined Good Samaritan in 1971. She was nominated for the Bernstein Award because of the support and comfort she provides to her patients. One colleague stated, "She is a mentor and a source of valuable information. Maureen has great depth of knowledge and understanding of the specific nature of the management of neurosurgical and trauma patients." Sheridan dedicates both her personal and professional life to advocate for patient care. She effortlessly strives for the improvement of care for patients. Sheridan resides in West Islip.

Edsall, registered nurse, has been employed at the Medical Center since 1983. Bonnie was recognized for being an educator, counselor and clinical expert in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. She works with patients who possibly face a diagnosis of breast cancer and remains by their side through diagnosis and treatment. One colleague stated, "Bonnie has touched so many patients, families and staff with her sincere compassion, expertise, medical knowledge, kindness and sincerity. She has impacted the quality of life for several patients." She also runs support groups and participates in several of the hospital's community education programs about breast cancer. Edsall resides in Islip with her husband, Wayne, and two children Kaitlyn and Kyle.
