West Babylon High School's Robotics Team won second place as a Long Island Regional Finalist at the 2007 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. Forty-one teams, mostly schools from the Long Island area, competed in the two-day event, which was held on March 30-31 at Hofstra University.

Team West Babylon - nicknamed Pandemonium- entered with their robot, Avalanche. In the first round, aptly titled Autonomous, the machines maneuver without any outside driver control for 15 seconds. The second round features the now student controlled robots facing off in a game against other entries where points are scored through a variety of methods and tallied after two minutes of play.

West Babylon's Robotics Team, competing for the fifth year, is comprised of 20 students and headed up by four teachers at the high school. The students are able to demonstrate their skills in math, science, technology, engineering, and computer programming through this challenging event. In addition to taking second place, they also won the 2007 SBPLI Long Island Xerox Creativity Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in creativity of the design, use of a component, or the strategy of play.

Shown in the photo at a West Babylon Board of Education meeting, trustees, parents, community members, and administrators gathered to celebrate the impressive achievements of Team Pandemonium, the high school's Robotics Team. The group earned second place in the March 2007 FIRST Robotics competition at Hofstra University. State Senator Owen Johnson, who provided start-up funds for the team, also attended the meeting to extend his congratulations.
