Early spring Soccer
Babylon
The Panthers will run with their offense this season. Early on they've been able to score high goal totals, most notably in a 14-2 win over Copiague and a 10-8 victory against Brentwood.
Look for Erin Boyle, Missy Ribando and Jordan Brown to be the biggest offensive threats this season. Copiague
Based on some early season blowouts, Copiague isn't going to have a smooth ride this year. They lost, 16-1, to Bayport-Blue Point and 10-8 to Roslyn. That was only the second win in the history of Roslyn's program, which started in 2005.
Deer Park
It's nice to have multiple threats on the offensive side of the ball. The Falcons have Monica White and Kristin Matos.
Both scored three goals against Whitman in the first week of the season during a 12-6 win and both should lead the way all season long for Deer Park.
Lindenhurst
When Nicolle Moran scored four goals against Sachem North on April 4, and Brooke Witkowski scored three against Seaford on March 28, it shows that the Bulldogs have some viable scoring threats.
The only problem is they lost both those games and don't have solid defense. Like every other school in this story, Lindenhurst has never won a Suffolk County or Long Island title, so this season will be tough like most.
North Babylon
The Lady Bulldogs, which finished 13-5 last year, are led by three outstanding offensive players: juniors Riley Perry and Caitlin Fifield and freshman Bria Hartley. Perry scored 63 goals and Hartley had 36 last year. Fifield takes rocket shots. Cori Kennedy is the defensive leader, while junior Stefanie Haferkamp holds down the goalie position.
West Babylon:
Shannon Smith holds the New York State record for goals in a season with 129 goals last year and she's only a sophomore.
West Babylon is also led by freshman midfielder Alyssa Murray, who scored 39 goals last year, sopho- more attacker Katie Harrison and junior goalie Lauren Filippone.
West Islip
Lacrosse runs feverously through the Federico genes. Kevin is on scholarship at the University of North Carolina and Karen is a senior this year at West Islip and the MVP of last year's team.
"She's one of the hardest working players on the field," coach Joe Nicolosi said.
The Lions (8-7) also have senior Taryn Crime, an All-County attacker headed to C.W. Post, and six other returning senior starters.
Courtney Schneck will play at Pepperdine next year and is a leader on attack. Kelly Calabrese, the top midfielder, is headed to Quinnipiac. Chelsea Reimer is the top defender and headed to American University.
The only question mark will be the goalie position. Sophomore Sally Finnegan doesn't have much varsity experience, but once she gets the hang of it, they could be a tough team to beat.
Early spring Baseball
Amityville
The Warriors' baseball team was swept in the first series of the season by Miller Place. They were outscored 47-9 in the three games.
The boys' track and field team won its first dual meet, 100-36, against Southampton. Victor Drew won the long jump and Rashim Gaines won the 100-meter high hurdles.
Babylon
Willy Rivas started the season off as expected, striking out 10 Hampton Bays' hitters in a 2-0 win. Since then, the Panthers are 1-2 (as of April 10), yet looked good in sophomore pitcher Brian Schweitzer's first varsity start, a 7-1 win, in which he let up seven hits and struck out seven.
The boys' lacrosse team (4-0) had big wins over Mercy, Lindenhurst and Floyd. Aaron Pinto scored four goals against the Colonials, while Gregg Griffo scored three against the Bulldogs.
Copiague
The baseball team, boys and girls' lacrosse teams, boys and girls' track teams and softball team have not recorded a win this season as of April 10.
The softball team lost, 7-0, to Deer Park in the last week of March, the boys' track team lost, 87-54, to Whitman and the baseball team lost, 17-4, to Riverhead.
Deer Park
Twins Chris and Joe Iovine went 3-for-3 against Bellport in a 7-4 win, while Joe Garrison won his first career start and pitched 6 1/3 innings.
The boys' lacrosse team lost, 10-7, to Eastport-South Manor in a dogfight. Both teams had the lead, both teams were down, but the Falcons didn't come out on top. Rich Picciano had three goals for Deer Park.
Lindenhurst
Aside from an early season loss to Brentwood, the Lady Bulldogs have looked superb over the last few weeks. They beat Ward Melville, Floyd and Sayville and should be ready for a tough League I schedule.
Maggie Cronin pitched a one-hitter against Sayville in the 11-0 win. Jen McComb hit two doubles in the contest as well.
The boys' lacrosse team beat East Islip, 11-6. Nick Tandoi scored five goals.
North Babylon
Steve Henriquez's three-run double in the first inning was all North Babylon needed to beat Hauppauge, 8-2. Vinny Aprano earned his first varsity win after pitching 5 1/3 innings.
The softball team lost, 10-0, to Hauppauge the same day.
Marissa Caroleo scored five goals for the girls' lacrosse team in a 15-10 win over Deer Park.
West Babylon
After losing, 7-0, to Deer Park, the boys' tennis team beat Central Islip, 5-2.
The boys' track and field team lost, 74-67, to Smithtown East and the boys' lacrosse lost, 7-5, to Patchogue-Medford.
The baseball team lost a close one, 7-6, to Lindenhurst.
West Islip
West Islip's known for lacrosse, but the baseball team isn't looking too bad either. They started the season 3-0, with non-league wins against St. John the Baptist and Floyd. Rob Faulkner threw a onehitter against St. Johns.
The boys' lacrosse team beat Massapequa, 13-5, in a non-league game, but lost, 7-6, to Chaminade in one of the best regular season games on Long Island this season.
The girls' lacrosse team lost, 12-11, to Kings Park.
