Holiday recycling tips from KIC The holidays are here and it’s time for trimming trees, wrapping gifts, giving parties and recycling. We can all help keep Islip clean without taking any fun out of the season. With a few very easy steps you can significantly reduce the amount of trash that would otherwise end up in our community’s waste stream. Be creative with your gift wrapping. Use gift bags, decorative boxes, reusable containers, scarves and fabric remnants to dress up your gifts. You can also use the old standby of reusing last year’s bows and carefully saved gift wrap. If you do buy a new gift wrap, choose one made from recycled materials. Avoid foil and plastic coated paper that cannot be recycled. Buy rechargeable batteries for electronic gifts and donate used clothing and toys to a local charity. Christmas trees offer a host of options for a cleaner holiday. An artificial tree will be used for many years and a real tree should be composted. Best of all, buy a live tree and replant it after the holidays. Consider trimming your tree with homemade ornaments made from things you have around the house or from outdoor materials like pine cones.
These are just a few ideas for getting started. Anyone interested in additional tips on enjoying this happy season while being kind to the environment should call Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC, at 224-2627 and request a Holiday Season brochure.
