Lindenhurst fifth graders journey into American Indian territory

Fifth grade students at Lindenhurst’s Daniel Street Elementary School recently took a trip back in time as they journeyed into American Indian Territory. Sponsored by the PTA, the s t u d e n t s spent a day learning all about American Indian life in the Eastern Woodland Region.

Students rotated to three different stations throughout the day. At the first station, the fifth graders were shown artifacts that American Indians used and even got to try on traditional ceremonial clothing. At the second station, students viewed a video about how Native Americans living on Long Island gathered food. Finally, at the last station, the fifth graders participated in traditional Native American children’s games such as “double ball” and “hoop and stick.”

N o t only was the program fun and entertaining for s t u d e n t s , but according to Robert Vetter, the program presenter, “It is a wonderful way for the students to refresh

their memories of what they learned about Native Americans in the fourth grade as a preparation for state tests later in the year.”
