Travelers’ Club news

The Travelers’ Club met on November 20 at the home of Betsy Davidson.

Charlotte Olsen reported on the literature and music of Mexico. Early writers include Nezahualcoyotl whose pre-Columbian literary works provide insight into the myths and legends of the Mayans as well as Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, a nun from the Seventeenth Century, who is one of the most esteemed baroque poets of the world.

The twentieth century brought Mexico two exceptional writers: the Nobel Prize winning poet Octavio Paz who Labyrinth of Solitude, an essay on the Mexican character,k is his most famous work and Carlos Fuentes, an essayist and novelist, who wrote Where the Air is Clear and The Death of Artemio Cruz both about the corruption of revolutionary values and the Old Gringo about the Revolution.

The music of Mexico is quite diverse, featuring a wide range of musical styles. The best known musical genre, by far, is ranchera, interpreted by a band of mariachis. Other types are noteno, banda, jarana and the trova. Mexico also has a long tradition of classical music - as far back as the sixteenth century when it was a Spanish colony.

Members of the music and drama committee, Margaret Daniel and Mary Valentine, read form a Carlos Fuentes story and a charming Aztec legend. they also played popular Mexican music.
