Philip VanBourgondien, 85, nursery owner

Longtime Babylon resident and commercial plant and flower grower Philip J. VanBourgondien died in Williamsburg, Virginia on November 15, 2006. He was 85 years old and was the past president of his family’s plant and flower nursery based in Southold, CJ VanBourgondien, Inc.

Born in Babylon, he grew up on Albin Avenue next to Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, whose land was donated by his grandfather, and lived there for 54 years. In 1975, he moved to Southold and in 1997 to Virginia.

Mr. VanBourgondien was proud a World War II Army veteran based in the Pacific Islands, a lifelong member of the American Orchid Society, a long-time member of the Long Island Flower Growers Association and a former trustee of the New York Florist Club from 1969 to 1971.

“He was just a loving sweet man. After he retired he just loved to come out and help work in the nursery,” said his daughter-in-law Alyssa who said he was a world traveler and a former member of the Babylon Yacht Club.

Mr. VanBourgondien leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Kathryn; his children: Susan O’Shea and her husband Gerald, Richard and his wife Alyssa, Constance and her husband William Bandy, Patricia and Peter and his wife Melissa; his grandchildren who called him “Pop Pop:” Amy, Katie, Maura, Brendan, Ryan, Alyssa, Alexandra, Brooke and Anna; his great grandchildren:Reagan and MacLean; his siblings: Neil, John, Elizabeth Hutchinson and Joan Condit; as well as many nieces, nephews and other loved ones. He was predeceased by his son, Philip.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, West Babylon. Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Babylon.
