Fannie Mae "Big Mama" Gilliam of Amityville

Longtime Amityville resident and devoted Zion Gospel Church parishioner, Fannie Mae Gilliam, died November 2, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. She was 96 and was affectionately known as "Big Mama."

Born November 27, 1909 to Robert and Loretta (Picken) Rambo in Jackson, Mississippi, she later moved to Amityville with her family.

Mrs. Gilliam loved to cook, garden, care for her family and pray, according to her family. She joined the Zion Gospel Church in Amityville in 1954 and served as a missionary. In her community, she was well known for helping those in need.

Mrs. Gilliam leaves behind her children: Junior, Loretta Dukes, Booker T., Argey B., Early B., Rob, James and Mary Helen; more than 200 grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones. She was predeceased by her husband, Grady and her daughter, Essie.

The Reverend Willard Price, pastor of Zion Gospel Church, officiated at the funeral service held at the church on November 8, 2006, followed by interment in Amityville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.
