Michael Buccino, 21: West Islip graduate of 2003
by Tiffany Elliott

Michael Joseph Buccino, who graduated West Islip High School in 2003, had his promising future taken away when he died as a passenger in a car accident on November 4, 2006.

The 21-year old, affectionately known as “Poppa Buccino,” was waiting to be called by the cities of New York or Las Vegas so he could fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer.

Mr. Buccino had lived in West Islip for 11 years and had earned a degree from Suffolk Community College. He worked at Storks Meat Market on John Street in Babylon for five years before working for his family’s local business, Metro Heating.

According to his father, Joe, he was a “Gentle Giant” and the kind of man that others called when they needed help in the middle of the night. He loved to work on his Ford Explorer truck and was an avid snow-boarder who frequented New York State slopes.

Mr. Buccino leaves behind his parents: Vivian and Joseph of West Islip; his siblings: Joshua E. and Toni Ann; his niece and goddaughter, Lexi Ann; his nephew and godson, Braiden Michael; his grandfather, Joseph; his grandmother, Leticia Boreland; his god parents: Laura Ann and Rene James Fitzpatrick; as well as other loved ones and many friends. He was predeceased by his grandmother, Marilyn Rose and his grandfather, Jorge Boreland.

He reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, West Islip, on November 9 and 10, 2006. A Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church, West Islip, on November 11, 2006. Interment followed at St. Margaret’s Cemetery in Plainview.

Donations in Mr. Buccino’s memory can be made to Autism Speaks, 2 Park Ave., 11th Floor, New York, NY10016.
