Students at Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in Lindenhurst recently united to help U.S. troops abroad in Iraq. For the project, students spent weeks collecting supplies for care packages to be sent to an Army troop based in Uniondale. The troop was sent to Iraq in June. Each grade was asked to donate particular items, based on what the troops need. At the conclusion of the project, Alleghany students, along with parent volunteers, stuffed 146 care packages for the service men and women.
To fund the cost of shipping the packages, Alleghany sold yellow ribbons (donated by the Little Flower Shop in Lindenhurst) and also held a penny drive. All packages created by Alleghany students will be shipped to Iraq and given to the troops on Christmas morning.
