L.I.G.A.S.E. honors West Babylon teacher
Andrea Montalvo, biology teacher at the West Babylon High School, was recently awarded the October 2006 Teacher of the Month award from the Long Island Group Advancing Science Education (LIGASE) at Stony Brook University. She was honored for her dedication to the field and to her students.
A teacher in the West Babylon School District since 2003, Montalvo teaches regents, honors and advanced placement biology students. In addition she currently serves as Varsity Field Hockey coach and Science Olympiad coach. Montalvo has also instructed the Howard Hughes Summer Program at LIGASE for the past three summers. Through those programs, Montalvo has taught various techniques in genetic engineering and created group research projects. With her experiences, she hopes to begin a science illustration course at the high school level.
Montalvo received her bachelors in arts from SUNY Stony Brook, her art and biology provisional certificates from Dowling College, and her masters in liberal studies and permanent certification in biology and studio art from SUNY Stony Brook. She has also been named to the National Teachers Honor Society and Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She resides in Islip.
