Emmett Keneally, avid local volunteer & BOCES teacher
by Tiffany Elliott

Former longtime Western Suffolk BOCES school administrator Emmett J. Keneally will be remembered as a devoted family man and avid volunteer in his Babylon community. Mr. Keneally, 58, died unexpectedly October 16, 2006.

Raised in Bayside, Queens, he moved to Babylon Village in 1977 and lived there for about 25 years. He lived in West Islip with his wife, Amy, at the time of his death.

For 30 years he worked his way up from a teacher to an administrator in BOCES, and was an active firefighter with the Babylon Fire Department (Electric Hose E4 House), a football and softball coach at Babylon High School, sat on the Village Planning Board and was past president of the Babylon Booster Club.

"He was a dedicated fireman who was well liked around the firehouse," said Assistant Chief Paul Twardy of the Babylon Fire Department.

"When he joined us, he said he went from having four siblings to dozens." Mr. Keneally was with the department for 29 years.

"When you were with Emmett, you always had a smile on your face," said Charles Schmidt, who was a close friend of 35 years.

Mr. Keneally was also a "die-hard" sports fan, who ran several marathons and loved the beach, animals, traveling, holidays and family life.

He leaves behind his wife, Amy of West Islip; his children: Erin of Sag Harbor, Robert of Babylon and Alana of West Islip; his siblings: Patrick, Donal, Maura and Dennis; his first wife Barbara of Babylon Village; many nieces, nephews and other loved ones, as well as many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Kevin and his parents, Mary and Daniel.

Mr. Keneally reposed at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons, on October 19, 2006. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's R.C. Church on October 20, 2006 followed by private interment.

Donations in Mr. Keneally's name can be sent to C.A.R.E. of America (an animal rescue fund he was active with) at P.O. Box 413, East Islip, NY 11730.
