Village of Babylon asked to address problems with teens
by Carolyn James

A meeting between residents, Village officials and Babylon School officials was held recently to address some of the problems that surfaced on Halloween, as groups of youths traveled throughout the Village vandalizing property and causing noise and disruption.

The meeting was the result of complaints by residents, one who spoke at a recent Village Board meetingn on November 14, asking what could be done to ensure that the incidents do not reoccur next year.

"There were groups of 30 to 40 youths making a lot of mayhem," said Tom McCarthy of the Crescent. There were police and code enforcement out but unfortunately they did not have the ability to do anything and it seemed as if they had no control over the situation.

Mayor Ralph Scordino said the meeting resulted in some assurances that the situation would be more closely monitored next year. The police said they would increase patrols, and the Village will be working with the school district to bring parents

into the equation to exercise more control over their children as they go out trick or treating.

Also at the November 14 Babylon Village Board meeting, the board of trustees moved on a number of resolutions. Specifically, the board:

set November 30 as the date to open bids for a new roof at the Babylon Historical Society building at 117 West Main Street. In addition, Mayor Ralph Scordino said the Village plans to complete some repairs to the interior of the building, but first wants to ensure that it is secure with a new roof.
