Boy Scout Troop 194 camps at Hither Hills and canoes in Maine

Boy Scout Troop 194 in Babylon recently went camping to Hither Hills. While there they toured the Montauk Lighthouse and the Coast Guard.

"It's not the destination, it's the journey. This old saying was never more appropriate for the Scouts of Babylon's Troop 194 than during their 100-mile canoe trip this past summer. After enduring the heat spell here on Long Island, seven Scouts and two adults from Troop 194 traveled to Maine to canoe the Allagash River.

On their journey they encountered temperatures in the mid thirties at night. A sudden squall with winds over 60 miles per hour, rain, fog and strong headwinds were some of the obstacles they had to face. For all their trials they were rewarded with sightings of moose, bald eagles, river otters and breathtaking views of northern Maine's pristin woods.

The group started as individuals and developed into a "crew" that worked as a cohesive unit. Tested by weather and Class 2 rapids, the crew worked to overcome adversity. When one canoe was swamped and pinned to a rock in the middle of the rapids, the crew pulled together plucking the canoe's occupants from the rapids and then getting a safety rope to the stranded canoe. Eventually freeing the canoe and making repairs, they continued on their journey.

It is because of the support of the community for the Scout program of Troop 194 that these young men have had a chance of a lifetime to experience nature's splendors, as well as its many challenges. On December 3, 2 to 6:30 p.m. Troop 194 will have its annual fundraising spaghetti dinner at the Babylon High School cafeteria.
