Lindenhurst Middle School recognized by Standard and Poor's Evaluation Services Lindenhurst Middle School has been recognized by Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services for significantly narrowing its achievement gap between the Hispanic/white population and the economically disadvantaged/ non-economically disadvantaged population. "Achievement gaps" are defined as the differences in proficiency rates on state reading and math exams among different groups of students (racial background and economic status, for example). Lindenhurst Middle School is one of 39 schools throughout New York State to be commended for its progress, although only one of two schools in the entire state that narrowed the achievement gap among two different groups of students. To be recognized by Standard & Poor's, a school must meet the following criteria: 1) Test at least 30 students in each group being analyzed; 2) Reduce at least one achievement gap between student groups in reading and math proficiency rates by more than 5 percent from one year to the next and simultaneously raise the reading and math proficiency rates for each student group being compared; and 3) Reduce at least one achievement gap between student groups in a grade-level reading test by more than 5 percent from one year to the next. Lindenhurst Middle School saw a 17.2 percent change in proficiency among the Hispanic/white population and a 13.5 percent change in proficiency when comparing the economically disadvantaged students to the non-economically disadvantaged population. Thomas Sheridan, vice president of Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services, states, "It is difficult to narrow achievement gaps, however there are a number of schools who have made outstanding progress. Their success should be commended."
