Mary Bonora: 102, artist born in Deer Park Throughout most of her life, Mary (Baccarella) Bonora was a professional artist who specialized in pastel paintings of landscapes, flowers and birds. She died October 24, 2006 in Greenport. She was 102 years old. Born in Deer Park, she grew up on William Street in Farmingdale. Her father, Casper Baccarella, who was an Italian immigrant worked on the Brooklyn Bridge and planted all the trees along the Southern State Parkway when he worked at the Belmont Estate in Babylon. Mrs. Bonora lived in Hempstead and Bellmore for 35 years and served as Hempstead's air raid warden during World War II. She later retired with her husband John to Sun City, Arizona. She leaves behind her son, Matthew of Shelter Island; her grandchildren: John, Nancy Smith, Jeanne Richardson and Elizabeth Cowles; nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 62-years, John; six brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Bonora reposed at the Shelter Island Funeral Home on October 26, 2006. A Funeral Mass was held on October 27, 2006 at Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Church, Shelter Island, followed by interment in Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Cemetery.
