Theresa Lennon Henry, former longtime Babylonian and wife of former Suffolk DA
by Carolyn James

Theresa Lennon Henry
Throughout her adult life, Theresa Lennon Henry used her talent, her skill and her devotion to care for her family, and for her community. The wife of former Suffolk County District Attorney and State Supreme Court Judge Patrick Henry, died Friday November 10 after fighting a 10-month battle with stomach and liver cancer. She was 72.

"She could do anything with her hands, cook, garden and sew," said her longtime friend and neighbor Peg Rendich. "She was precise about everything, and always lots of fun."

The same vigor and enthusiasm that went into caring for her home and for her family, went into caring for the community of Babylon Village as well, recalls Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino.

"I always remember her as a community minded woman who took interest in the Village and in all of its happenings," said Scordino. "She was a great person and an important part of Babylon."

While living in Babylon, Mrs. Henry was a community activist and helped restore the historic Nathaniel Conklin House. She also got her real estate license and became a successful agent.

"She was one of the busiest and hardest workers I have ever encountered," said Jerry Snover of Snover Real Estate where Mrs. Henry worked for many years. "Kind acts were performed for clients and non clients alike, often without their knowledge and while her wonderful family always came first, many people were included as part of her "family" of friends and acquaintances."

Mrs. Henry was born in Worcester, Mass., one of five children. Her father was a crane operator and she attended Catholic School, where she was named the high school prom queen.

Following her graduation from high school, she worked for American Airlines as a supervisor in its VIP operations in New York City. Forty-four years ago, she married her husband and the couple lived first in New York where Patrick Henry practiced law, and then in Babylon. Her husband worked for the SuffolkCounty DA 's office and was elected to the department's top position which he held from 1976 to 1988. He served on the bench in State Supreme Court from 1989 until last year. The couple moved from Babylon to Brookhaven several years ago.

She was described by her children as "the perfect mom".

"She could do it all- cooking, baking, gardening," said her son Lindsay Henry, who serves as a Babylon Town Councilman. "She was incredibly industrious and energetic."

In addition to her son and her husband, Mrs. Henry is survived by her son James of Hampton Bays; daughters Jennifer Henry McCabe, Margaret Shaw and Elizabeth Kennedy, all of Brightwaters, and her sisters Margaret Fitzgerald of Charlton, Mass., Helen Shea of Worcester, Mass., and Nancy O'Connor of Thompson, Conn.

Large crowds gathered at the Fredrick Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip where Mrs. Henry reposed. A Mass of Christian Burial was said at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006 and burial followed in Babylon Cemetery, Babylon. The family has requested that donations in Mrs. Henry's name be sent to the Ascent School for Children with Autism, 819 Grand Blvd., Deer Park, NY 11729.
