Local woman likes her sports extreme
"I come from an active family, so I've always done a lot of sports," said Kunkel, 32. Her sister also roller skates, skis and does karate. "I don't think what I do is dangerous, though my family tells me to be careful all the time. It's just fun and I love to be outdoors." Hailed as a "sexy sport chick" on the website of the same name, she is a member of so many teams, one wonders how she keeps her schedule straight. Every winter she moves to Colorado to work as a professional snow boarder and competes in the X-Games, as well as many other competitions in which she shreds snow and rules the half pipe. She works as a snowboarding instructor in Aspen Valley in the winter and in Switzerland during the summer.
As a member of the Mid Island Rolling Thundercats in the Long Island Roller Rebel league, she's known as C-Roll when she's pushing and punching her way around local rinks. In fact, the team just completed its first season and went undefeated until the Wicked Wheelers of the West beat them in the championship in Old Bethpage on October 14. Self-taught in all her competitive activities, and at the top of her game in them all, she also spends time wake boarding, balance boarding and surfing. On her time off (which is "almost never" according to Kunkel) she spends time with her family, plays the guitar and drums and works.
"Long Island is always home to me though...I spend as much time as I can in the summer surfing and being on the beach," said the competitive and world-traveling Kunkel.
