Local resident earns academic award

Midshipman mark Wanderer of Babylon Village has received a gold Star at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point for academic achievement during the first term of 2006.

Wanderer, the son of Bob and Annette Wanderer, was honored at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony at the Officers' Club in Melville Hall on October 17.

Gold Stars are awarded to students who achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better during an academic semester. An "academic star" is equivalent to being named to the dean's list.

Among the countries Wanderer visited were Japan, China, South Korea, Jamaica, Trinidad, Venezuela, Belgium, Germany and United Kingdom.

A graduate of Babylon High School, Wanderer was nominated to attend the Academy by congressman Steve Israel.
