Memorial set for Babylon resident and Lindenhurst teacher Georgia Ruel A memorial service has been scheduled for former Lindenhurst High School Choral teacher and Babylon resident, Georgia Ruel who died in Florida July 19, 2006. A service will be held on at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 36 East John Street, Lindenhurst. Georgia Gianopoulos was born to Louis and Payio Liakopoulos who emigrated from Greece in the early 20th century. After graduating Pennsylvania State University with a degree in music, she taught in Maryland before moving to Long Island. She worked as a choir director, vocal music and humanities teacher for about 20 years at Lindenhurst High School, where she was mentor for many, according to her family. She retired in 1974. For many years she lived on Hiawatha Road in Babylon where she will be remembered as a "legendary hostess," who loved to cook fine foods and entertain. In 1998 they retired to Vero Beach, Florida. Mrs. Ruel was a world traveler who had been to more than 20 countries and took great pride in what she wore. She also loved to attend concerts and spend time with her family. She leaves behind her husband of 44 years, James. R.; her siblings: Dr. Patrick Gianopoulos, Nicholas Gianopoulos and his wife Antoinette M.; her nieces and nephews: Teri Lee Angelos, Danielle G. Osewalt, Melanie Gianopoulos, Michelle Gianopoulos, Christiana N. Gianopoulos, Elizabeth C. Gianopoulos and Cynthia Kauffman; her godsons: Kenneth Dean, Andrew Dean and Ian Dellenbeck; her grand-nephews: Patrick Osewalt, Keith Kauffman and Kenneth Kauffman; her grandnieces: Lara Osewalt Leininger, Tiana Gianopoulos, Alexis Gianopoulos and Nikki Angelos; and her great grandniece, Georgia Ann Gianopoulos; her great grand-nephew, Alexander James Osewalt; as well as many loved ones and friends. She was predeceased by her sister-in-laws: Norma Gianopoulos and Mildred Abbott. Funeral services were held in Florida with family members.
Donations in Mrs. Ruel's name can be sent to the VNA Hospice House, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida 32960 or the YMCA of Moshannon Valley, for a new arts and culture center at P.O. Box 426, Philipsburg, PA 16866.
