Islip Town pumpout boat deemed a success

Islip Town Supervisor Eric M. Hofmeister and Town Board members announced that the Town's first pumpout boat has concluded its limited season with great success.

"We have received positive feedback from a number of boaters," said Supervisor Hofmeister. "They were happy with the service and with the ease of use of the pumpout boat."

During its limited run, the 23-foot boat responded to vessels who radioed it on VHF channel 73. It operated on weekends and Labor Day Monday from Saturday, August 26 through Sunday, September 17, serviced 119 boats and collected 1,730 gallons of waste. The short season enabled the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs to give the program a trial run before the 2007 boating season.

The Town's plan is to supplement the land-based pumpout stations with the boat, traveling from West Islip to Bayport on a regular basis, and servicing boats within the area. The Town of Islip's land-based pumpout stations are located at the East Islip Marina, the Bay Shore Marina and the Atlantique Marina on Fire Island. A fourth station is nearly finished at Brown's River Marina, on the Bayport side. It will be online soon.

The pumpout boat offloaded its tank daily at the East Islip station, where a private contractor emptied the holding tank each day the boat operated.

"This is another good step in keeping our bay clean," noted Supervisor Hofmeister. "We look forward to next Memorial Day, when the pumpout boat will begin operating again."
