Serving up some healthy lunches in West Babylon

Sharp minds and healthy bodies are on the menu at South Bay Elementary School in West Babylon, where discussions about teaching children to make healthy lifestyle choices are continuing among parents, students and staff. At a recent meeting of the South Bay School Wellness Council, cook Carmela O'Hara explained various strategies she used to encourage the children to make healthier choices at lunch time. As a creative means of assisting the children to select the best foods to place on their lunch trays, O'Hara created model trays, each containing varieties of fruits, vegetables, salad, juice, milk and bottled water. Pictured are South Bay food service staff members Mary Payan, Carmela O'Hara and Gaetano Coiro with fourth grade students Patrycia Siemion and Paige Belli.
