Readers have more to say on bond vote Dear Editor: Tuesday night I attended the Babylon School Board meeting and I learned things I had never heard before. I'd like to share this with your readers. Did you know that in order to install artificial turf, the entire athletic field, all the dirt several feet deep, has to be removed and taken away to be replaced with ashes? That provides the layer for the "turf." There has been no environmental impact study done to determine the effect this will have on the environs, such as pollution to the lake and run-off as it will affect the surrounding areas. Also, the artificial turf 's life expectancy is assured for eight years and we are taking out a 15-year bond. Think of those implications. The other proposition regarding maintenance expenditures is being considered because the money already in our contingency fund, which has been assured over the years through our taxes and was designed to cover maintenance expenditures is being diverted at the Board's option to cover an expense that is not due at this time and will empty out our contingency fund. The Babylon School's auditor explained this is an option for the Board to make; it is not a law nor a necessity. So, what I got out of the meeting is that by approving the propositions we have nothing to gain and only the possibility of a great deal to lose.
