Deer Park High School student poet recognized

Shown in the photo, left to right, are Deer Park High School Principal Nanine Cuttitta, published poet Shakira Smith and her reading teacher, Mary Dickinson.
Deer Park High School sophomore Shakira Smith received the honor of having not just one, but two of her poems published. The American Library of Poetry has selected her poem Tears, to be published in a new book entitled Excellence. Additionally, the League of American Poets have chosen her poem Life as I know it for publication in A Treasury of American Poetry. Both poems were selected by two different publishers from thousands of entries submitted from across the country. Furthermore, Shakira has been nominated to serve as Student Ambassador for People to People, an organization founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in which selected students travel overseas for two to three weeks during the summer break to learn, share and represent their communities and schools.
