West Islip HS students participate in mock emergency drill
West Islip High School students volunteered to participate in Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center's recent Mock Emergency Drill. Members of the high school's AP (Advanced Placement) Environmental Science class studying environmental issues, the teens viewed this opportunity as a first-hand experience to enhance the unit. The students were asked by officials at the Drill to run into the hospital area screaming from a terrorist's attack, which they did. On hand were members of the West Islip Fire Department, Islip Town officials, Suffolk County Fire Marshals, Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Aviation, and ambulances. The students were hosed down for contaminants, put on stretchers to be exam- ined, and taken inside the hospital for additional tests. The Drill took less than an hour, with all rescue teams working together smoothly. The students reacted well to this crisis dress rehearsal, although they commented afterwards that they felt it should be practiced again. They added how difficult it is to set up a protocol to be followed, should a real chemical spill occur, that would accommodate hundreds of victims and the many scenarios that would be presented. Teachers Robert Purdy and Kelly Sepe were on hand to oversee the students in the Drill, and reported back to the district that the teenagers were happy to be invited and would gladly participate again.
