Recently retired Bay Shore High School Social Studies teacher Patricia Ponzi was recognized by the Bay Shore Board of Education for the special distinction of Harvard Club of Long Island Distinguished Teacher of 2006. Ponzi was nominated by Aisha Muharrar, 2002 Bay Shore valedictorian.

The Harvard Club of Long Island honors outstanding teachers who have made the greatest difference in the lives of their students. Harvard students recognize excellence because excellence has gotten them where they are today. Ponzi made the entire AP European History experience an interesting and engaging process - emphasizing college preparation like proper notetaking and time management skills. She continued her dedicated efforts by assisting students with their resumes and applications and following up with them. She set high standards, modeled disciplined behavior and shared her love of learning.

Several former students attended the board recognition of this extraordinary educator and were thrilled that she was the recipient of the prestigious HCLI award, "It is really special that a Bay Shore High School teacher of Mrs. Ponzi's caliber was singled out." (Emma Katz) her sister Ani Katz added that "...not only did we learn 'for the test', but more importantly, for the purpose of becoming aware of the history and politics of our European neighbors." Alumnus C. J. Gineros also added that, "In addition to the academic piece, Mrs. Ponzi goes that extra mile helping each student reach his potential." She inspired Brad Gilles to hone his leadership skills and he is currently serving in the South African Peace Corps. It is said that teachers plant the seeds of knowledge but do not necessarily have the opportunity to see the plants grow. This special educator had the unique opportunity to receive the well-deserved kudos from her former students and learn about their many successes since leaving the hallowed halls of Bay Shore High School. It was a wonderful and thrilling reunion for all involved and scholarly distinction that is well deserved.
