Babylon Library welcomes new director
Sullivan, who grew up in Garden City, has worked in just about every position the library has to offer, beginning as a page in her hometown library when she was a teen. Other Long Island libraries in which she has worked include Lynbrook, Westbury, Northport, and Smithtown. But she was drawn to the small-town atmosphere that the Village's library reflects, said Sullivan. "This is such a close-knit, warm, and welcoming community," she said. Her first goal is to help everyone-staff and patrons-enjoy the newly expanded library, and then she wants to concentrate on building up specialty collections, and expanding adult- and young-adult programming. "I want to invite segments of the community in so they know what services we have for them," said Sullivan. "I want them to know that their library is a source of information, whether it is medical, travel, or hobby related." "We had several excellent candidates for the position," said library board president Mary Gallagher, "but she stood out among them. She already knew a lot about our library and some of our needs." Sullivan says the Babylon Library has a wonderful, hard-working board, which has a great vision for the library. Part of that vision is to make sure residents of Babylon Village understand all the different facets of the building that can help them personally and professionally, says Gallagher. Sullivan holds a master's degree in library science from Long Island University and a certificate in library administration from Stony Brook University. She fills the position left vacant by Lusak, who successfully supervised the Babylon Library's expansion project, on time and on budget. "I am meeting and greeting the community right now," said Sullivan. | |||||
