The People Speak...
"The tax issue is especially a burden. Property taxes quadrupled in the last five years...where is it going to be five years from now? I don't now how much long will I be able to afford to live here and raise a family." Kenneth Heiser, Massapequa "I believe that if people come to this country they should have to learn how to speak English, pay taxes and assimilate. There needs to be more control over the border. I'm also concerned about taxes which are out of control. It's becoming harder and harder for people to stay here. Someone needs to do something." Dean Elliott, Massapequa "I'm concerned about taxes and the war like everyone else, but what can be done? As far as immigration, they'll never eradicate the problem completely but securing it is a good first step. I think there's something wrong with the fact people come here illegally and make money to send back to their own country without paying their taxes." George Smith, West Islip "I hope the war be be resolved sooner than later because of the negative effect its has on the county's psyche. Locally, I think there needs to be a better solution to the funding of our schools."
"I'm mostly concerned with fiscal equality, specifically that LongIsland is getting its share of funds. I understand why New York City might need more funding but Ijust want to make sure we don't get less than we do now. I'm also concerned with terrorists, but more locally people that aren't balanced like the man that just stole that little girl. I'd like to see more kids taking the bus to keep them safe from people like that." Lisa Koffsky, West Islip "As a nurse I can say firsthand that many of the maternity patients are illegal immigrants who want to have their babies here so they can stay. If they want to be here they should have to get legal and pay taxes. Funding for our schools also concerns me. It seems like they are always cutting programs because we don't get enough money from the state but they can't raise taxes anymore. We're between a rock and a hard place." Emil Pavlik, Amityville Locally the biggest issue is a concern about bonding because these bonds have to be paid back and while it doesn't seem much at the time, it adds up and can cost taxpayers a lot of money over the years. The Town of Babylon seems to be doing a good job with keeping taxes down and working to improve the bond rating but there is still a concern.
Joanne Smith, Amityville Things are such a mess. It is very hard for families to stay here on Long Island. I am in the Village of Amityville and we lost a lot of (tax revenue) when the hospital closed but more than that this area needs a hospital and the closing of Brunswick was devastating. William Piper (Dawud), Amityville It is very frustrating because voters don't believe their government is run by honest people or that the election system works. I think that the effort to change the method of voting here in Suffolk is just a way of allowing the powers to be to get more control. Linda Lott, Amityville Local: Quality of education in Western Suffolk is a big concern for me. There is not enough funding and there is too much of an emphasis on lowering taxes and not enough emphasis on improving educational services.
