Legislator Stern works to restore Elwood's Little School House

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD, has taken the lead in the effort to refurbish Elwood's Little Red School House. The Little Red School House has been a part of the Elwood community for the better part of a century, opening its doors for the first time in 1915.

For forty years, it was known simply as the Elwood School, and housed the first through the eighth grades. The schoolhouse was the primary education center in Elwood until it was replaced in 1955 by the Cuba Hill School, later renamed James H. Boyd High School in honor of Elwood School District's first Superintendent.

Legislator Stern has met frequently with civic leaders and activists seeking to restore the Little Red Schoolhouse, including Albert Wesnofske of Commack, who attended the Elwood School in the 1930's. "I look forward to the day when the lights will be on again in that building, with people coming and going," Wesnofske said. Legislator Stern has met with members of the Suffolk County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department to asses the structural integrity of the building and has worked closely with the Director of Historic Services. Walter Rabe, President of the Greenlawn Civic Association, and Vice President of the Elwood Taxpayers Association, notes that work is already commencing on the schoolhouse, as the red shingles installed in the late 1940s have been replaced. "I'm glad Legislator Stern set up the meeting with the County Department of Parks at the Elwood Little Red Schoolhouse. It was very informative," Rabe said.

"The Little Red Schoolhouse is a part of our Long Island history and should be preserved for future generations to have the benefit of learning about our past. With continued development and encroachment on open space, it's more important than ever to preserve what makes our community so special," Stern said.
