Students in Lindenhurst head back to school
Shown in the photo, new students to Lindenhurst Middle School get ready to begin a new school year. On Wednesday, September 6, the nine schools within the Lindenhurst School District were once again open for business. Over 7,300 students filled the halls, meeting new teachers, becoming accustomed to new buildings, and for some, shedding a few tears as they nervously began their school careers.
At Harding Avenue Elementary School, new principal Brian Chamberlin greeted his students with a smile, escorting the kindergarten students into their classes. He then officially kicked off the school year by reading the poem My Promise to all students and teachers. He concluded his remarks by stating, "I look forward to a successful year ahead and I wish everyone a great year."
Down the street at E.W. Bower Elementary School, students in Carol Grasso's kindergarten class shook out their nerves by dancing to a few learning songs. Grasso then read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, a book about "first day jitters."
At William Rall Elementary School, fifth grade teacher Valerie Dietrich presented her students with "Fifth Grade Survival Kits," which included school supplies such as a pen, eraser, and glue stick. Creatively, Dietrich related each item to a different character trait that is essential for success in the fifth grade.

At the middle and high schools, it was business as usual as students rotated to their various new classes. Having been through orientations earlier in the summer, the sixth and ninth grade students found their way around with little problems. In his opening day remarks, Lindenhurst Middle School Principal Frank Naccarato echoed the sentiments of all within the district. He said, "I'm sure this year will be as good, if not better, than last year. Let's make it the best year yet!"
