Suzanne Lawrence, lifelong Babylon resident
Native Babylonian resident Suzanne W. Lawrence died on August 8, 2006 after a short illness following a stroke. She was 88 years old and spent her entire life in Babylon.
Born in 1918 to Emma Robbins Walbridge and George Huntington Walbridge, she was a member of a large extended family with deep roots in Babylon Village. When she married Bryan Lawrence in 1940, she joined an equally large clan, who had originally come to spend summers in Babylon, and then eventually settled in the Village. After her husband's death in 1970, she continued to live at their home at 1 Virginia Road.
She graduated from Walnut Hill and Smith College, where she studied history and government. She was a member of Christ Church Parish and the Babylon Yacht Club, volunteered for the Red Cross, and worked for many years in the Sudder Bazaar, when it was owned by her good friend, Frances McGratty. With her husband, an avid boater, she enjoyed fishing and crabbing on the Great South Bay, and spending summers at Point O'Woods on Fire Island. In later years, she invited friends and family to join her for summer outings on the charter fishing boat, the Ida Jean.
She was famous among friends and relatives for her command of local and family history, and for her talent for writing poems to commemorate family occasions. After her death, her niece Anne Collins Howell of Australia recalled a poem Sue had written to welcome Annie to the Lawrence family home on North Carll Avenue, which the family affectionately nicknamed "Pneumonia Hall."
Mrs. Lawrence leaves behind her children: Bryan (Hunt) and his wife Betsy Deale, her daughters Suzanne L. Goldhirsch and Jane W., her husband Fred Millhiser; her six grandchildren; her three greatgrandchildren; a sister, Nancy W. Hanaway of Babylon; two cousins: John Walbridge of West Islip and Merritt Thurlow of Takoma Park, MD; and many nieces and nephews as well as other loved ones and friends.
A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon on August 11, 2006. Private interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Babylon, was held August 12, 2006.
