How wonderful the new building looks on Deer Park Avenue and George Street in Babylon Village, which is the new home of Roomors. And, the enclosures around Gino's Pizzeria and Restaurant, on the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Railroad Avenue, have peaked our interest. We can't wait to see what the renovated building will look like when completed.

This kind of revitalization, like a cold, is contagious, and we believe the Scordino administration now has a fine opportunity to come into its own by initiating a program for revitalization of the entire area in and around the railroad station.

This could begin with something as simple as a meeting with all of the landlords there to outline a plan for change and improvement to some of the buildings.

Other possibilities include the establishment of a facade program in which the landlord and the Village share the cost of this type of improvement. The Village might be able to receive reimbursement for its share through Federal Housing and Urban Development grants or grants from Suffolk County's downtown revitalization program, which paid for the construction of the statue of Robert Moses next to Village Hall.

Another option is to establish a Business Improvement District, which would funnel some additional tax money collected in the area back into the stores and buildings there.

The Village has done a tremendous job of putting in new lighting and sidewalks and installing beautiful fencing around the railroad station. Maybe now is the time for Mayor Ralph Scordino to consider taking all of this just one step further.
