When community and officials work together, government works

Dear Editor:

As we celebrate this Independence Day, we are reminded of the ideals of democracy where people have a voice in government. This has never been truer than the recent issue regarding the proposed privatization and incinerator at Bergen Point Sewer Treatment facility in West Babylon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the countless residents who joined me in my mission to halt a proposal that was wrongheaded from the start. Your message was heard loud and clear all across Suffolk County. The emails, letters and phone calls you sent to voice your opposition made everyone stop and listen.

In addition I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the residents who graciously opened up their homes and hosted numerous in-house discussions on an issue that affected us all. Thank you to the residents in the community who took time out of their busy schedule to attend public hearings and express their dismay about a perceptively irresponsible proposal.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the elected officials who represent responsible government every day and joined me in the campaign to stop the incinerator proposal. Senator Owen Johnson, Supervisor Steve Bellone, Councilman Lindsay Henry, Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino, Lindenhurst Mayor Thomas Brennan and Amityville Mayor Peter Imbert should be commended. It was a privilege to work together to address community concerns.

Lastly, let me thank Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy who reminds us, according to Thomas Jefferson that "...Our government was founded on the principle that all persons have equal rights, and that government is responsible to, and derives its powers from, a free people".

Hats off to all of you who assisted in halting this project. There definitely is strength in numbers. The residents of the 14th Legislative District proved this to be true.

On this Fourth of July, remember the rights you are celebrating are alive and well. If you disagree with me, then write me. Why? Because it's your right!

Wayne R. Horsley Suffolk County Legislator, 14th District
