Heard It On The Grapevine
IT WAS A GREAT DAY for all of us "old timers" when the Historical Society held its annual "Ol' Time Day" program last Sunday afternoon. President Jackie Marsden discussed the background of the Tulip parade; held back in the late 1940s and early 1950s. There were memorabilia and pictures galore of the parades, featuring bands from all over the area, and floats sponsored by various service organizations in the Village. The parades culminated in the Babylon High School athletic field where the Queen and her ladies in waiting were crowned. There was even an old film of the event. We recognized lots of local officials, and of course the Queen one year, Joan Billings. Kudos go to Jackie Marsden for planning a very interesting afternoon. If you missed it, the Society is open Wednesday and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and there's still time to see all of the interesting exhibits.
THE PERCIVAL AWARDS, honoring the local students with the highest mark in American History were presented during the afternoon. Mary Ellen and Tom Sullivan are co-chairmen of this program and the $500 awards were presented to the students by Bill Holmes. Christine Goodbody, a Babylon High senior received a 99 in the History regents and a grade average of 99.8 in social studies. She will attend Princeton University. Eric Smith's mark was also 99 in the Regents and his social studies average was 97. Eric is a senior in West Babylon High School and he will be attending Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh in the fall. We really do have outstanding students in our local schools. They are to be commended.
AND ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY FOR A BABYLON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE. John Robinson, son of Mrs. Rinn Robinson recently was promoted to the rank of full Colonel in the U.S. Army. His mother attended the ceremonies held at the Pentagon. John graduated from the Air force Academy, and lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Jeanne and children John and Alex.
WE WISH A FOND FAREWELL to Bob Schapiro who left last week for his new home in Washington, D.C. Bob is well-known in the Village and for many years he owned and operated the "Tempus Fugit" Antique Shop on Main Street.
IT'S OFFICIAL! The Babylon Yacht Club opened with a bang for the season last Saturday. The opening gun was fired at 1 p.m. Monsignor Chris Heller of St. Joseph's Church delivered the opening prayer and Commodore Jeff Schneller introduced the present and past members of the Board of Governors. There was a large crowd on hand, enjoying the beautiful weather. Saw Sally and Ted Shiebler here for the season from their California home, and looking great, Irene Morris was there she and her husband Bob spent the winter months in Florida; chatted with Joan and Bud St. John home after attending the high school graduation of their granddaughter, Molly Weinstein in Charleston, South Carolina, and also chatted with Mary Jane Young, Rinn Robinson and many more.
BARNSTORMERS UNITE. Yes, that was former Babylonians Ardith and Bob Holzmacher and Jeanne Ramsey being buzzed along San Diego's harbor in a bike Rickshaw after a grand tour of the mighty "Midway" aircraft carrier. They were attending the American Airlines "Kiwi" Club's convention (former and present flight attendants). There are 50 chapters across the nation that raise large amounts of money for local and national charities. Their "Paradise Point" resort's landscaping was like a hunk of Hawaii in the heart of San Diego's harbor. Needless to say, much fun was had rehearsing old flying days.
SHE'S A GREAT GRANDMOTHER NOW. Yes, Peg Rendich is proud to announce the arrival of her first great grandchild. Kylie Grace was born on May 25 in Palm Beach Gardens, weighing in at eight and one half pounds. She's the first child of Rachel and Tom Godina, and the fourth generation of Grace's in the Rendich family. She's the first grandchild of Dr. and Mrs. John Maier of Wellesley, Massachusetts. Peg has nine children and 17 grandchildren.
